Scripture tells us the simple gospel requires  the finished work of Jesus to cleanse of of our own sin, God states that

 Romans 3:23 

" ...for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.   To some  people this is apparent but not everyone recognizes this because

 

Psalm 10:4

In his pride the wicked does not seek him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God.

 

 

Romans 8:5-8

 The above passage says man's mind is fixed on what  that nature desires,,,.  The mind of sinful man is death, BUT the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace; the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so.  Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God.

In fact Psalm 14:1 reads,  "...  The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, their deeds are vile; there is no one who does good. said again another place

 

 

Isaiah 53:6

We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

Romans 1:18-21

  The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them.    For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.   For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.  It is darkened because... our heart lies to us

Jeremiah 17:9

The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure.  Who can understand it?  This lying heart may  try to persuade us we do not sin or our sin is not so bad, HOWEVER, scripture warns us

1 John 1:10

10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.  There is no room for listening to our  heart rationalizing" I am a good person" since the Prophet Isaiah wrote

Isaiah 64:6

  All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our" righteous acts" are like filthy rags... our sins sweep us away.  Our own guilt remains and there is a price to be paid for that transgresion

 

Romans 6:23

 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
